Logo Winners + Games Night!

Good day, everyone :)

Our event last month, Games and Gathering Night, was a success! Thank you very much to everyone who joined us. The pictures will be uploaded later - but as a recap, we had tons of Indonesian food; gorengan abang2 such as bakwan and pisang goreng, roti bakar, and of course the legendary indomie! For about four hours or so, our attendees played in FIFA tournament and poker. Congrats to the winner of our poker game that night, Winardi Hambali, and the winner of our FIFA tournament, Cheol Kim! We also announced the winner of our logo competition:

Congrats everyone! Below are all the participants and their logos:

Martin Prijatna

The intertwine of two letters, 'u' and 'i', symbolizes the unification between SFU-IA association and the university. It can also mean as 'you' and 'I' in a strong relationship. The letter 'i' stands out to signify the Indonesian Association. 'I' can also imply as a human body to emphasis IA's humanitarian and community efforts. Purple and red colours give both cool and warm qualities to represent the creativity and diversity as a cultural organization. On the other hand, grey stands for solidity and reliability as a young well-educated team. A lower-case serif font adds character to the brand that is young, friendly and fun.

Victoria Simansjah

Objective: To create a logo that represents and "speaks" on behalf of SFUIA without it having to "say" anything. Details: The IA is put into a speech bubble on purpose to show that it is a logo of an association where voices could be and would be heard. The lowercase "i" is juxtaposed with a stickman so that it gives the sense of individuality within the association. The colours both represent Indonesia as it is red and white... and a little touch of SFU's red. A touch of type is added into the element to further describe the acronyms. The logo is made up of two dimensional colours, red and white to represent professional, simplicity and youth elements. Within the mail, there is an attached pdf displaying the alternate ways of representing the logo in business cards and also in different backgrounds.

I tried to have the logo for SFU Indonesian Association be very simplistic. The gray background is not part of the logo, it is just a background so that the letter 'A' will not join with the white default background and cause some misunderstandings. This logo uses the color of our Indonesian flag which is red and white. These colors will greatly resemble the proud nationality of Indonesia. Red means brave and white means pure. Under our very familiar color of our flag we can unite as Indonesians. Almost as if it is a mark of our identity. Through the diversity of Indonesians, we will be identified as one with this iconic logo. Because of the simplicity, this IA logo will easily be remembered with visual cognition. Meaning that this logo is easily recognizable and people who are familiar with it will quickly recognize that it is the logo of Indonesian Association. The black background puts a huge visual weight in the logo. For some people, this weight represents the strong ambitions that we Indonesians have. For other people, this weight may be understood as challenges or a bad connotation. But even through the challenges we have faced, we Indonesians still pull through together and we can stand proud of this logo that unites Indonesians.

The background of this logo is in the shape of the famous Indonesian kite, widely flown across the nation, to show the immense Indonesian culture. In addition to that, the logo resembles the dove, which symbolizes peace.

Red, and white are the main colours used because they are the colors of the national flag. The contrast in the colours also represents how different people can co-exist in harmony, and create a beautiful environment.

Hands have been incorporated to go in accordance with the things SFUIA stands for. They show motivation, a desire to achieve, along with people coming together as one.

In a year of well-achieved omnibus projects, Belkibolang is one of the best. It showcases the talents of nine smart young directors, a couple of them already with indie features to their credit, most with previous experience making shorts, two making their debuts. (The only one with an existing international reputation is Edwin, well known to VIFF audiences. He here contributes the penultimate episode about a couple's risky sexual foreplay.) Writer Titien Wattimena's overarching concept is to sketch the various kinds of people (and their various predicaments) you might encounter in Jakarta on the night of New Year's Eve, but "realism" is only the film's starting point. The stories are playful, resonant and sometimes fantastical: they range from a wordless encounter in the rain to a taxi driver in a traffic jam trying to find a way to tell his wife that he wants a divorce, via a justified mugging and a pair of romantic teenagers. Kamila Andini (she's the daughter of Indonesia's leading filmmaker Garin Nugroho) got to know the seafaring Bajo tribe when she went diving in the Wakatobi archipelago. Her engrossing debut feature draws on her knowledge of the region (above and below the waves), her encounters with local people (some of whom ended up acting in the film) and Bajo folklore (the belief that a ritual mirror can show a missing person who will return from the sea). Her story centres on Pakis, a 12-year-old girl whose father is lost at sea, and her difficult relationship with her mother Tayung, who keeps her face permanently masked in white lotion. Pakis has a friend and confidant in her young neighbour Lumo, and she comes to consider Tudo, a researcher from Jakarta, as a kind of surrogate father. Working with the great cinematographer Rachmad Syaiful (he shot the Joko Anwar movies we've screened in VIFF), Andini does without melodrama and smartly concentrates on the day-to-day life of characters. Along the way she illuminates the region's ecology and effectively argues that the Bajo way of life should be a model for Indonesia as a whole. And her film is stunningly beautiful. Penarikan Indomie dari Market Taiwan?!

Kabar besar dari negeri Taiwan. Ditemukannya bahan pengawet dan bahan-bahan bahaya di dalam produk kebanggaan nasional Indonesia, Indomie, menyebabkan kasus produk tersebut di market Taiwan. Kabarnya Indomie instan ini mengandung bahan pengawet E218 (Methyl P-Hydroxybenzoate). Media massa di Taiwan telah memberitakan kasus ini secara luas, merendahkan reputasi produk Indonesia ini.

Tapi kalau kita lihat. Bisa-bisa saja ini adalah suatu rekayasa yang dilakukan oleh sebab kompetisi ketat di Taiwan dalam bidang makanan instan. Dari detik.com, dikatakan bahwa masuknya produk mi Indonesia ini bikin bisnis lainnya was-was. Karena kita menjual mi yang enak dan murah! Contohnya saja, di Malaysia, harga Indomia dinaikkan 27% setelah sudah masuk ke market selama 1-2 tahun. Aneh, kan? Mungkin saja masalahnya bukan di pengawet atau konten dalam produk mi kesayangan ini. Mungkin saja ini adalah masalah persaingan? PT Indofood juga menurut saya tidak mungkin berani inves banyak uang untuk mengproduksi produk Indomie dalam jangka internasional bila mereka tidak memenuhi peraturan departemen kesehatan negara tersebut. Kalo menurut saya juga, semua brand mi instan pasti mengandung pengawet.

Kasus ini sangat penting bagi anak2 mahasiswa Indonesia di seluruh dunia. Takut aja Kanada ikut-ikutan ngeri sama Indomie. Lalu produk Indomie ditarik distribusinya. Lalu gimana kita mahasiswa2 Indonesia yang hidup dengan "staple food" kita yang nomer 1, Indomie?

Kita berdoa aja Indomie tidak akan hilang dari rak-rak toko T&T. Kalo sampe Indomie dicekal, ayo, mahasiswa2 sekeliling vancouver, cepet2 kita borong Indomie dari toko-toko terdekat lokasi kita.

SFUIA General Meeting

Hello beloved SFU Indonesian Association members! We welcome all of you new members to SFU Indonesian Association. And of course, welcome back to our members who have been with us since the previous semesters! We hope that you have had a pretty awesome first two weeks at SFU for Fall 2010.

The weather is cold and gloomy, nonetheless that doesn't gloom our excitement for meeting our old and new members. We will be holding our first general meeting and Icebreaker event this Sunday on September 19th, 2010 at 2PM! (execs got their meeting before this, BTW) This will take place at SFU SURREY campus since it's such a gorgeous place to be at, especially for new people who just arrived in Vancouver. We'll meet up at BLENZ coffee at the campus lobby. We will write detailed description to get to the campus below.

We'll be playing some Icebreaker games, get to know each other, and there'll be quizzes!~ Yay! Of course we'll also ask you guys to give your suggestions for events line-up. And if you got some great objectives and goals that we ought to achieve, we'd be more than happy to hear about that.

Summertime 2010

Ah, it's finally summertime! It's time for some warmth, friendships, fun times, cold drinks, hot foods that will blow your mind away and ultimately parties! But then, we can still do some good in the midst of having all these fun times. Better yet, we can do it WHILE having fun. That's right! It's what we're aiming for again this 2010! We are doing out giveback program for all of you to enjoy. Yes, enjoy!

SFUIA is planning on throwing some events, including:

• Paintball! - our popular event!
• Nonton Bola Bareng (World Cup 2010) - watch the games together
• Picnic - perfect event for the warm Vancouver summer (rain, go away~)
• Tennis tournament - sweat your summer heat off!

Anyways, SFUIA is going to be working hard to raise funds for our summer events. We either will donate it to YKAI (Yayasan Kesejahteraan Anak Indonesia) or Rumah Belajar (that is coordinated by Technic students from Universitas Indonesia).
